Unit 22 pitch evaluation

Evaluating our pitch

Changes that needed to be made: Change the target audience women age range from previously 20-60 to 17-24 to narrow our audiences to impact them specifically.

Our pitch idea was successful as complimented by our classmates, comparing to the other ideas amongst the pupils our idea of domestic relationships is original and has a deep and easy moral to it which could help others being effected or act as a prevention.

Strengths: Our pitch idea was simple and easy but effective, the idea of domestic relationships allows us to be versatile in which during the filming phase we could leave room for adjustments in term of narratives and storyline for example adding extra scenes of conflict to enhance the idea of being something that happens in a real life day to day basis if it wasn't already intense enough. But that's if we actually need to redo scenes, because our idea is simple filming would also be a piece of cake therefore allowing us to focus more on enhancing our camera shots/angles to show our understanding and also for the viewers pleasure.

Another strength of our idea is the locations we plan to film at, the street we will be filming at will be easy to acquire permission and it is close by to where we all live therefore it is convenient if we need to add extra scenes in. However the remaining place we need to acquire access to is the house of the couples, we are still deciding on where this should be located or whose house we should use.

In terms of budget we are pretty much sorted already as it is, we do not require any unobtainable props, only a pair of scissors as the weapon and a pair of actors who will be willing to help.

Weaknesses of our pitch idea as my own self-evaluation would be the acting involved but it wouldn't effect our ability to film using different techniques but it may reduce the believability of our story therefore having a less of impact on the audience.

Weaknesses based on feedback revolves around the targeted audience and who our film would impact directly, result of this we have decided to change to audience range from 20-60 to 17-24 because we've come to a conclusion that amongst those ages people are more likely to begin committing to a serious relationship therefore things like domestic relationships are more likely to occur.

Our group did pretty well hence the fact that Alberta should of contributed more during the presentation and that us as a whole could improve on answering our classmates questions more fluently and in depth.

We've got through all our slides and explained it well enough however the slide regarding social groups could of been improved upon as it was unclear to who we were aiming at in terms of ethnicity but we agreed on sticking it to white females despite domestic relationship happens to all females regardless of race but white females in particular is more centered upon and publicised.

Funding

Film funding is crucial to filmmakers as without it the quality side of film cannot be achieved or the film itself cannot be created as it requires sponsors or funds to be able to fully create the story, to produce a film the necessities include hiring staff, equipment and costumes, sets and locations and transport.

Pre-sales

Pre-sales agreements are  executed contracts made with distributors before the film is produced. These agreements are based on the strength of the project's marketability and sales potential in its given territory. A distributor will generate a value for your project given the script, the attached talent, and crew, as well as the marketing approach.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is a popular way of funding films because it allows fans to donate money in order to reached the desired goal to see the project in action. Popular crowdfunding sources include Kickstarter, IndieGoGo. In addition to donations, if a person donates a certain amount of money the get special rewards or offers specific to Kickstarter therefore the'll be more inclined or persuaded to.

Agencies

An example of a organisation that provides film funding is BFI, the BFI provides funds to filmmakers awarded from the national lottery foundation, if a production team think they have what it takes then they can directly contact and get in touch with BFI.

Of course there isn't just BFI, if your film production is within the UK then there are many other choices you can choice from, and then again being accepted for a grant is another issue, here are some of the agencies below.

-BBC Films
-Film 4
-Film London
-Creative England Fund

Exhibition

Exhibition

Marvel age of Ultron was available to watch across most cinemas in the UK including Imax 3D. It is available to watch on Blue-ray and DVD and only on Sky Movies for online streaming services at the moment.

Platform such as DVDs and Blu-rays allows every household to own the movie therefore it gives the audiences a chance to watch it again if they really enjoyed the film. It also benefits the producers because it gives them another chance to advertise the film for example as TV adverts on ITV, and for those who've missed to chance to watch it in the cinemas are able to watch it.

Sky Movies is a ideal 'platform' for this film because the majority of Movies on sky movies are entertainment and action etc therefore the film will be more suited for sky movie audiences.

Peckhamplex shows most of the latest films and costs £4.99 for an all day ticket. 3D tickets are £5.99.

How we consume film has changed, nowadays it is more of a passive activity, during the viewing process most of us are isolated. However this could be because of the accessiblity of films compared to when film first started, when film first started film used to be a special event, (not that it isn't know), but it was strongly considered an art form amongst theatre shows, but nowadays anyone who has an reliable device can be able to download or stream a film and watch it portibably, this means the interaction side of things has majorly changed in terms of a inevitable 'must' to now a choice.

Narratives and Non Linear and Linear

Narrative Structures

Todorov's theory consists of 5 stages, these stages are:

1. Equilibrium everything as it should be.
2. Disruption which something happens, that disrupts the peace/norm
3. Recognition realisation that disruption has occurred
4. Repair an attempt to repair the disruption
5. NEW equilibrium a restored order

A Linear narrative is film the follows a chronological pattern, majority of films use a linear narrative construct, whereas other films that do not follow this pattern is categorised into Non-Linear, this can be easily spotted by techniques such as flashbacks. I will be firstly analysing Linear Narratives first in the paragraph below.

An example of a Linear film would be: Avatar (2009).

This screenshot shows the main character entering the virtual machine to be transported to his avatar.

This screenshot shows the protagonist on a mission after entering the new body. This was right after him entering the virtual machine, by doing this it gives the audience a straight thrill and it entertains them through the continuous plot instead of giving flashbacks as it is not as intriguing, because the storyline is interesting especially in sci-fi films the audience would want to know what is going to happen next so by using a Linear Narrative there is no delay.

Audience benefits from this because they may of scene the pre-sequel and if the new film changes up the narrative the audience may not like it or the film may lose its certain style/touch. But films like hunger games people watch it because of the plot where Katniss the protagonist wants to change up things so people do not become tied up with rules and the government and the audience follows behind Katniss and wants her to achieve this therefore having a Linear narrative is perfect.

A Non Linear film is a film that does not follow a chronological order, a non-linear film uses techniques like flashbacks:

By using flashbacks this
gives a better understanding to why something is happening as it unfolds the story in a unique way, similar to like consequential-ism theory,  The use of flashback gives the audience ‘back story’ and a additional understanding.

You can get a richer story by using non-linear which may appeal to the audience more as it could have a unique style.

Non linear films are popular amongst action films where a scenario where a character is almost about to die and his flashback shows how far he has come and it encourages him to not give up therefore the reinforces his strength and resolve therefore engages the audience and possibly give them a personal identification as relation to how the characters represents the past or current self therefore making it realistic.

Another example:
Scott pilgrim Vs the world really benefits from a non linear, Scott the protagonist gets a lot of second chances to change the plot of the film because of the decisions he has made because of this the audience gains a pleasure of completion or beating the bad guy and prevents a ending of a different outcome which isn't as great where the bad guy dominates instead of Scott.

Weekly production

For this weeks weekly production meeting we discussed the location of where we were going to film, at first we wanted to use someone's house but we couldn't get hold of anybody willing forehence we next decided to film on the first sofa when we enter the 3rd floor of sixth form but we realised we could not turn the lights off therefore it would be inconvenient for us to show the female character watching tv so we changed locations once again to the sofas next to the kitchen which we got permission of Mr Wilson and the lighting is perfect. Filming in the sixth form mean that there might be a lot of noise constraints such as traffic from people walking by but however this will ensure us that we will get the best out of lessons since the filming location is on campus meaning that we have more time to perfect each shot. Nonetheless if this doesn't work out we can still choose to change locations.

weeekly 3

This weeks production meeting we discussed the availability of our actors, at first we was going to use Ibrahim as the male actor in our film but his time schedule didn't fit in with ours therefore we are going to use Omario in year 13 because he is able to make the schedule. We also discussed the most suited camera angle for our film, we are going to shoot in a high angle in relation to the superiority of the male character towards the female. We are going to prioritise the female character by focusing the camera most of the time on the facial expressions or whatever shots needed at most time compared to showing the male character to a minimum, by doing this it puts the audience in the shoes of the main character as she is abused by the male character, this portrays that the female is scared to look directly in the males eyes. We plan to follow our storyboard, and each box would be 1-2 scenes which will last approximately 20 seconds.

Weekly last

This week our group discussed how we are going to edit our clips together in one place and checked if we have the correct scenes in place. I were to contribute to the majority of the editing as i had previous experience with editing software before.

In terms of time management i think we handle it pretty well, the clips we got sufficed as it finishes to the whole plot-line, however some shots were a little 'wobbly' which may not be as noticable but however if we were to re-film it, we may not find another day where all of us are available as we are to create an addition production schedule plan.

Wednesday 4 November 2015

Release Form

Our group does not require a realise form because we are doing the filming within school premises and we have permission from Nadar to film in her house.

Unit 22 Genre

Science fiction films uses speculative and science based depictions of phenomena’s that are not necessarily accepted by mainstream science, such as extraterrestrial life, often alongside with futuristic elements such as spacecrafts and robots.

Therefore the codes and conventions within science fiction films would undoubtedly included science and technology. Science fiction films often focuses on political and social issues

Codes and Convention in science fiction
- Set in future
- Aliens worlds
- Time travels- travelling backwards and forwards through time has always been a popular in science fiction film
- Spacecrafts and robots
- Imaginative settings
- Alien abductions
- Galactic Empires that oppress everything
- Conflicts between alien and human
- The concept of extraterrestrial life is a popular convention in science fiction films, where the aliens are seen as a threat to the human race

The science fiction film genre has long been a tool for discussing controversial topics and issues, and providing us with thoughtful social commentary on potential unforeseen future issues.

The presentation of issues that are disturbing to an audience can be made more acceptable when they are explored in a future setting or on a different earth like world, and by keeping us entertained by using advanced technology such as CGI and special effects.
The altered context can allow for deeper examination and reflection of the ideas presented, with the perspective of a viewer watching remote events.

Most controversial issues in science fiction films tend to fall into two general story lines, Utopian or dystopian. Either a society will become better or worse in the future.

Period Drama:

This genre relies heavily on mise-en-scene, the costumes, props and lighting and setting are key to making a period drama look convincing of the era it is set in. If the film is set in say Victorian era the props has to resemble that era in some way for example having victorian architecture and not something like a electronic cupboard in the set.

Period drama usually has a lot of drama in it therefore most of the time it is a series which may leave cliffhangers after each episode.

Period drama is usually set between 1800 to 1900, during that period males were the dominant ones and therefore a feministic narrative stereotype were set in place and woman framed as objects for desires such as for the male gaze.

Unit 1 - A1 - Materials/Facilities

Materials

Self-made materials are materials that are made specifically for the film. For example in the film Jassaric park the footsteps of the T-rex was made a dog chewing a hard toy. Self-Made materials can be for any film genre but sci-fi films are most common in using self-made materials because of the complexity of the sounds or costumes.

Archive materials are those that have been preserved for a long time, example of which would be in a documentary, the items used by cavemen and historical context as such.

Library materials are materials that are already made and can be used by anyone. Example of a genre using this would be comedy which provides the live audience laughter sounds.

Here is a couple of organsations that offer Libary and Archive materials:
BBC Motion Gallery
BFI National Archive
British Council Film Collection
British Pathe Film Archive

Our materials for our film:
Props: Scissors,
Costumes: Roadman clothes
Technological equipment: Camera, mobile phone

We do not need any budget to create our film, we only need a pair of scissors which we can acquire from the art department.

Unit 1 - A1 - Legal Issues and Regulation

BBFC carries the job role of regulating each film and classifying certain age ranges, U, PG, 12A, 15, and 18. The decisions made are based on four sub categories which include Sex & Nudity, Taste & decency, bad language, and violence. BBFC decisions can also be influenced by the general public which helps decide upon which age rating a certain film should be.
Example of BBFC in action is the Ban of Love Camp 7 in 1969 where it proclaims Nazi Exploitation.

ASA is a independent media regulator also known as Advertising Standards Authority which carries the role of regulating adverts making it suitable for people in the UK. Age/time comes in play and certain ads are only showed after 8pm/ 9pm because of the suitability of the audiences. ASA monitors ads to check the codes are conduit is being followed.ASA recently banned a strongbow advert for suggesting that alcohol is as important as a relationship.

OFCOM is another independent regulator working in the UK which specialises in communications such as community radios. OFCOM also offers help with TV and broadband and other services. Example of OFCOM in action is the ban of an advert because it contained bad language which could of caused serious offence. Link of article below:

BECTU is a trade union which provides help and advice for independent workers so they do not feel insecure as they work under a employer or independently. It is important because it provides workers with the fee to pay for court if they are supposing fired or sued.
